Course overview: The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) sponsors Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®), an evidence-based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to manage obstetric emergencies effectively. The ALSO Instructor Course is a half-day course that prepares current ALSO Providers with the skills and knowledge they need to effectively teach ALSO courses. Participants attending an ALSO Course learn practical, standardized team-based approaches to managing emergency situations, such as postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, breech delivery, cord prolapse, and maternal resuscitation. Become an ALSO Instructor, and learn about adult learning theory and faculty development, as well as how to offer effective feedback, teach in small group workstations, and evaluate participants.

Course Overview: Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is rapidly becoming a standard of care for clinicians and the fifth pillar of physical examination. POCUS has the power to transform bedside diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and procedures for family medicine. But training is essential for clinicians who want to become confident, competent POCUS practitioners. The FMEC is collaborating with the Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI), founded by family physicians, to offer this preconference and meet this critical need. With significant hands-on experience, the preconference will cover POCUS basics as well as a selection of specific techniques (cardiac, pulmonary, abdominal, renal, OB, DVT, procedural, ocular, musculoskeletal and soft tissue). This session is geared toward family medicine faculty, and the instructor-to-learner ratio will be approximately 1 to 4. NOTE: This workshop is repeated Friday morning with the same content. Please register for only 1 POCUS workshop.
Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

Course Overview: This highly-interactive preconference will use a flipped learning model, role playing, and breakout sessions to provide attendees with practical skills and experiences. Registrants will receive instruction one month before the event to read and/or view key literature and media (time commitment estimated at under 1 hour). Onsite, faculty will present on cross-cultural communication and lead participants through an identity exercise, illuminating ways we experience power, privilege and oppression in society in intersecting ways. The “words matter” philosophy examines how language can perpetuate or dismantle structural racism. Attendees will learn how their choice of words impact racial and health justice in medicine and can either empower people or marginalize them. A unique and fun exercise with role playing as patients, physicians and medical interpreters will help illustrate how dysfunctional communication impacts health. Finally, attendees will develop plans to use what they learned in their own institutions and affect positive change for patients and providers.
Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

Course Overview: ACGME guidelines effective July 1, 2023, strongly encourage family medicine residencies to partner with other programs through regional learning collaboratives to share resources and attain educational and community aims. The FMEC has been running learning collaboratives and learning communities across training programs in the region for many years, on topics such as chronic pain, reproductive care, integrative medicine, diversity in the primary care pathway, and more. Join FMEC leaders at this preconference to develop skills to lead effective collaborative projects while also making plans to meet ACGME requirements with FMEC and your colleagues. The session will address collaborative models, definitions, and leadership; defining and measuring outcomes; and project management of learning communities. A portion of the session will be devoted to engaging participants in existing and new collaboratives being developed by FMEC members.

Course Overview: The IMPLICIT Interconception Care project is an evidenced-based approach used to screen mothers during well-child visits (WCVs) from 0-24 months and address maternal risks such as tobacco use, maternal depression, family planning, and multivitamin with folic acid intake. Data collected in the past 10 years indicates that moms are present at ~95% of the WCVs. This makes WCVs an opportune time to assess and address maternal needs and risks with the aim to improve maternal health and reduce premature and low birth weight infants. The IMPLICIT Network has also initiated a “4th Trimester Care” project to improve maternal risks in the time period following childbirth. This network meeting will provide education and quality improvement instruction for IMPLICIT Network sites. Intended for IMPLICIT Network sites only.
Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

FACTS About Fertility
Faculty:
Marguerite Duane, MD, MHA, Co-founder and Executive Director, FACTS
Other faculty to be announced
Course Overview: FACTS about Fertility will inform attendees about opportunities to expand their knowledge of the science of tracking the female cycle and its role in restoring reproductive health and family planning. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recognizes the menstrual cycle as the fifth vital sign. As such, this session will demonstrate how the cycle chart can aid in monitoring women’s health, as well as its use in the diagnosis and management of common women’s health concerns. FACTS leaders will equip colleagues with patient education resources, including an evidence-based shared decision-making tool that medical professionals may use to provide information to patients on these methods. We will also update participants on ACA coverage for fertility awareness-based methods (FABMs) and discuss how these methods may be implemented in Title X clinics. The session will conclude with a presentation by student and resident ambassadors, who will share about the opportunity to participate in research, present at conferences and discuss the impact of the program on their professional development.
