Course Overview: The IMPLICIT Interconception Care project is an evidenced-based approach used to screen mothers during well-child visits (WCVs) from 0-24 months and address maternal risks such as tobacco use, maternal depression, family planning, and multivitamin with folic acid intake. Data collected in the past 10 years indicates that moms are present at ~95% of the WCVs. This makes WCVs an opportune time to assess and address maternal needs and risks with the aim to improve maternal health and reduce premature and low birth weight infants. The IMPLICIT Network has also initiated a “4th Trimester Care” project to improve maternal risks in the time period following childbirth. This network meeting will provide education and quality improvement instruction for IMPLICIT Network sites. Intended for IMPLICIT Network sites only.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

• Implement clinic/program-wide screening of new mothers for risks such as tobacco use, maternal depression, family planning, etc.
• Screen new families for unmet contraceptive needs during the first 24 months following childbirth.
• Conduct data collection and continuing quality improvement across clinic site(s) with regard to interconception care and 4^th trimester care.

Course Overview:
Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is rapidly becoming a standard of care for clinicians and the fifth pillar of physical examination. POCUS has the power to transform bedside diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and procedures for family medicine. But training is essential for clinicians who want to become confident, competent POCUS practitioners. The FMEC is collaborating with the Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI), founded by family physicians, to offer this preconference and meet this critical need. With significant hands-on experience, the preconference will cover POCUS basics as well as a selection of specific techniques: gall bladder, abdominal aortic aneurysm, cardiac echo, lung, deep venous thrombosis, and musculoskeletal. All registered participants will receive 3 months of access to the GUSI learning platform, including POCUS Essentials, Pediatric Essentials, and MSK Essentials, which is valued at over $700. This session is geared toward family medicine faculty, and the instructor-to-learner ratio will be approximately 1 to 4. NOTE: This workshop is repeated Thursday afternoon with the same content. Please register for only 1 POCUS workshop.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

• Have POCUS skills that will allow them to improve clinical outcomes, facilitate more rapid diagnoses, shorten time to definitive treatment, reduce failure and complication rates during procedures, and improve patient satisfaction.
• Begin to develop a curriculum and become faculty for POCUS in their family medicine residency program.
• Work toward credentialing and privileging in the use of POCUS at their home institution.

Course Overview: Nexplanon® (etonogestrel implant) is a birth control implant placed just under the skin of the inner, non-dominant upper arm. Once in place, Nexplanon releases a continuous low dose of hormone to help prevent pregnancy. This 2-hour preconference will consist of a didactic session on the product, along with hands-on training for insertion and removal procedures and implant localization techniques. You must be present for the entire session to be issued a completion certificate. The certificate is required by the FDA to insert or remove Nexplanon.

Course Requirements: Registration is only open to doctors or advanced practice clinicians with furnishing or prescribing privileges in their state. Registration is limited to 36 participants. FMEC will require your National Provider Identifier (NPI) to register.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify appropriate patients to receive etonogestrel implant for birth control.
• Prepare patients for placement, and manage technical issues related to placing the contraceptive device.
• Insert and remove the birth control implant in patients.

Course overview: The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) sponsors Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®), an evidence-based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to manage obstetric emergencies effectively. 

The ALSO Instructor Course is a half-day course that prepares current ALSO Providers with the skills and knowledge they need to effectively teach ALSO courses. Participants attending an ALSO Course learn practical, standardized team-based approaches to managing emergency situations, such as postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, breech delivery, cord prolapse, and maternal resuscitation. Become an ALSO Instructor, and learn about adult learning theory and faculty development, as well as how to offer effective feedback, teach in small group workstations, and evaluate participants.

Course Requirements: YOU MUST BE A CURRENT ALSO PROVIDER TO PARTICIPATE. ALSO Provider status as of September 19, 2024 will be confirmed and is REQUIRED. If you are an ALSO Provider, please confirm that you status will be valid as of September 19, 2024. If you need to become an ALSO Provider, view ALSO Provider Courses offered and complete the training before the FMEC meeting.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Discuss educational tools that can be used when giving feedback to ALSO course participants.
• Describe how to assist participants in dealing with questions and conflicts that can occur during the workstations.
• Demonstrate teaching capabilities by providing hands-on role-play utilizing maternal-fetal manikins along with timely feedback in order to adapt teaching methods to various situations.
• Demonstrate the ability to facilitate group discussion, as well as consider ways to implement faculty and learner feedback to enhance the educational experience.

Course Overview: A hands-on dermatology workshop featuring clinical skills applicable to primary care practice. All participants will engage in discussion, demonstration and the skills practice of biopsy, excision, suturing and dermatoscope use. Additionally, wound assessment, wound care and dressing selection with examples of wound care options and supplies will be reviewed. All levels of providers and learners will leave this session feeling confident in basic dermatologic procedural skills. The session will include the following workshop stations: Dermatoscope (A), Biopsy - Punch and Shave, Suture: Simple (B), Fusiform Excision, Complex Suture (C), Cryotherapy, Wound Care (D). After an introduction and overview of each station and the skills to be practiced as well as local anesthetic techniques, participants will rotate through stations. At each station, participants will have a short didactic reviewing techniques followed by hands-on experience with all techniques. Greater than 80% of workshop time will be devoted to direct skills-practice.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

• Utilize the dermatoscope to evaluate skin lesions and document photos
• Perform biopsy on skin findings with various techniques including punch, shave and Fusiform
• Resect cysts using proper techniques
• Use various suture techniques to close skin biopsies and lesion removals
• Employ cryotherapy for treatment of appropriate skin lesions 
• Identify the basic types of wounds and principles of wound care 
• Choose appropriate wound care dressings in clinical care

Course Overview: FACTS about Fertility will inform attendees about opportunities to expand their knowledge of the science of tracking the female cycle and its role in restoring reproductive health and family planning. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recognizes the menstrual cycle as the fifth vital sign. This session will demonstrate how the cycle chart aids in monitoring and managing women’s health. FACTS leaders will equip colleagues with patient education resources, including an evidence-based shared decision-making tool that medical professionals may use to provide information to patients on FABMs. We will also discuss how FABMs may be implemented in underserved populations.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

• Counsel patients about modern, evidence based fertility awareness based methods, including their effectiveness rates, benefits and challenges of use.
• Discuss how FABMs may aid in the diagnosis and management of common women’s health conditions, including abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
• State opportunities to expand your knowledge of fertility awareness and restorative approaches to reproductive health care.
