Course Overview: IMPLICIT Network is a learning collaborative that works with primary care practices to implement two programs, 4th Trimester (4TM) and Interconception Care (ICC), both aiming to improve perinatal, maternal, and newborn health. The ICC project is an evidenced-based approach used to screen mothers during well-child visits from 0-24 months and address maternal risks such as tobacco use, maternal depression, family planning, and multivitamin with folic acid intake. The 4TM model works to improve maternal risks in the postpartum period. This network meeting will provide education and quality improvement instruction for IMPLICIT Network sites. Intended for IMPLICIT Network sites only, and those interested in joining IMPLICIT.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Implement clinic/program-wide screening of new mothers for risks such as tobacco use, maternal depression, family planning, folic acid intake.
  • Screen new families for unmet contraceptive needs during the first 24 months following childbirth.
  • Address psychosocial and biomedical risk factors that impact birth outcomes and postpartum health, implement early postpartum visits, and identify resource needs for new birthing people.
  • Conduct data collection and continuing quality improvement across clinic site(s) with regard to interconception care and 4th trimester care.

Course Overview: The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) sponsors Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®), an evidence-based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to manage obstetric emergencies effectively. The ALSO Instructor Course is a half-day course that prepares current ALSO Providers with the skills and knowledge they need to effectively teach ALSO courses. Participants attending an ALSO Course learn practical, standardized team-based approaches to managing emergency situations, such as postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, breech delivery, cord prolapse, and maternal resuscitation. Become an ALSO Instructor, and learn about adult learning theory and faculty development, as well as how to offer effective feedback, teach in small group workstations, and evaluate participants.

ALSO Instructor Course information: YOU MUST BE A CURRENT ALSO PROVIDER TO PARTICIPATE. ALSO Provider status as of September 18, 2025 will be confirmed and is REQUIRED. If you are an ALSO Provider, please confirm that you status will be valid as of September 18, 2025. If you need to become an ALSO Provider, view ALSO Provider Courses offered and complete the training before the FMEC meeting.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss educational tools that can be used when giving feedback to ALSO course participants
  • Describe how to assist participants in dealing with questions and conflicts that can occur during the workstations
  • Demonstrate teaching capabilities by providing hands-on role-play utilizing maternal-fetal manikins along with timely feedback in order to adapt teaching methods to various situations
  • Demonstrate the ability to facilitate group discussion, as well as consider ways to implement faculty and learner feedback to enhance the educational experience

Course Overview: Publishing in a peer-reviewed medical journal can feel intimidating, but you can learn the skills to contribute to the medical literature. In this interactive workshop, leaders of FMEC’s new journal will provide a path to developing your medical writing skills. Come learn how to read like a writer, how to use peer reviewing to expand your skills, and how to prepare your first manuscript for publication. We’ll provide lots of practical tips with ample opportunity to interact with the editors and ask questions.

Course Overview: Join us for a deep dive session to discover how cycle tracking data and ultrasound can aid in the diagnosis of common reproductive health concerns, like PMS, painful periods and infertility. Attendees will learn how to read the female cycle chart in a systematic manner, like you read EKGs and practice reading ultrasound images to identify pathologies like PCOS, fibroids, and polyps. We will also explore the value of narrative writing for sharing experiences of patients and clinicians, when empowered with body literacy. Finally, we will conclude with opportunities to learn more to provide more comprehensive holistic women’s healthcare.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • State key external observations or biomarkers that women can learn to observe to chart their cycle
  • Define normal ovarian-menstrual cycle phases and lengths
  • Learn how to read female cycle charts in a systematic manner, like you learn how to read an EKG

Course Overview: This session will both teach and test wilderness medicine skills utilizing an interactive, game-based approach. Wilderness emergencies are rare but can be treated with a strong foundation of knowledge and creative problem-solving. In nature, family medicine physicians must quickly and accurately diagnose and treat conditions, often with limited resources. In this session, we will explore several facets of wilderness medicine: managing injury in austere environments, using handheld point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to diagnose common emergent conditions, preparing medical kits for various excursions, and a friendly competition to learn about common exposures and pathologies encountered off the beaten path.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Manage sprains and fractures with unconventional tools
  • Identify key anatomical structures with ultrasound (such as needle decompression site for a pneumothorax)
  • Pack a medical kit appropriate for the planned excursion
  • Manage common conditions encountered in austere environments

 

Nexplanon Workshop (2pm - 5pm)

Course Overview: Designed for clinicians new to Nexplanon® (etonogestrel implant) or those seeking a refresher, this hands-on workshop provides attendees with the essential skills and knowledge to safely insert and remove Nexplanon, the long-acting reversible contraceptive implant. Participants will receive a lecture on the following: indications for use, product description, mechanism of action, and clinical data (efficacy, pharmacokinetics, contraindications, warnings/precautions, adverse reactions, drug interactions, and use in specific populations). Participants will then receive step-by-step teaching regarding proper insertion and removal techniques, anatomical considerations, patient counseling, and complication management. Using simulation models, attendees will practice procedures under expert guidance to build confidence and proficiency. You must be present for the entire session to be issued a completion certificate. The certificate is required by the FDA to insert or remove Nexplanon.

Course Requirements: Registration is only open to doctors or advanced practice clinicians with furnishing or prescribing privileges in their state. Registration is limited to 26 participants. FMEC will require your National Provider Identifier (NPI) to register.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proper aseptic technique and procedural steps for the safe insertion of Nexplanon
  • Identify anatomical landmarks to ensure correct placement of the implant
  • Perform Nexplanon removal using appropriate techniques to minimize patient discomfort and complications
  • Recognize common insertion and removal challenges and apply effective problem-solving strategies
  • Counsel patients on Nexplanon’s efficacy, benefits, potential side effects, and aftercare instructions
  • Implement best practices for reducing procedural risks and ensuring patient safety
  • Develop confidence in performing Nexplanon procedures through hands-on simulation and expert feedback
